Welcome to My World – Herbs For Strong Bones

Hello World!  Today I’m sharing info about 4 herbs that help you keep your bones strong. It is mostly women who have this issue as we get older, but I know for a fact that men are also affected. My father had osteoporosis as do I so I am very interested in this.  These plants (basically weeds) surprised me. Do you use any of these?

Herbs That Build Strong Bones

Thanks to dairy marketing bureaus and their massive marketing budgets, most of us think of dairy products to help build our strong bones. But eating more of these foods may not be the best way to boost your bone health and ward off osteoporosis. When it comes to building strong bones and preventing your bone diseases, herbs really shine. Here are my top 4 herbs that build healthy and resilient bones: (Wish I knew about these when I was growing up.)

Dandelion

Dandelion shoots (the stems, leaves, and flowers) are not only rich in your

essential bone-building nutrient, calcium, they also contain plentiful amounts of boron, which is critical to your strong bones. Dandelion shoots have one of the highest amounts of the mineral boron of almost any food. (I take a boron supplement but I’m not sure it’s as good as the real thing.)

Dried dandelion stems, flowers and leaves can be dried (or obtained already dried from your local health food store) and made into tea. Add one teaspoon of dried dandelion per cup of boiled water. You let it steep for at least 10 minutes; then you strain and drink 3 times daily for your best results. Drink for 3 weeks then take a break for one week, and repeat.

Horsetail

Horsetail (no, not the tail from horses) is a uniquely thin herb with long,

thin leaves whose shape resembles horse hair. Not only does the herb build strong bones, researchers found that it can prevent infections linked to fractures and osteoporosis. Published in the medical journal Cell Proliferation, the study found that horsetail improves your bone-building ability of osteoblasts. Osteoblasts are cells that create bone by laying down a matrix to which minerals bind to form bone. The scientists concluded that ingesting horsetail extract may be a good bone-building strategy for you.

Another study in the same journal only a few months afterward found that horsetail also prevented cells from breaking down your bone, a process that can contribute to bone diseases like osteoporosis. Horsetail is also high in the mineral silica, which plays an essential role in strengthening your bones. Add one teaspoon of dried horsetail per cup of boiled water. Let steep for at least 10 minutes; then you strain and drink 3 times daily for best results.

Nettles

Nettles in my backyard have a pink flower & the Sting! Nettles will actually help your bones stay strong, but you must be careful when handling them. I learned this the hard way. Their sting hurts & lasts a good 24 hours. I have a love-hate relationship with this herb that I always thought of as a weed.

stalks of the plant, nettles are a nutritional powerhouse, containing an abundance of calcium in a form that is readily absorbed. Dried nettles do not exert a stinging action. Add one teaspoon of dried nettles per cup of boiled water; then you Let steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink 3 times daily for best results. You can also add dried nettles to soups or stews to give these foods a nutritional boost.

I have mixed feelings about handling nettles as I was stung through my gloves so you must be careful!

Red Clover

much more than your mowing over them. Research published in the medical journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that the compound called formononetin found in red clover helped you to prevent the development of osteoporosis in animals. And, fortunately, you don’t have to be able to pronounce this compound to benefit from it.

You can make a tea from dried red clover flowers by adding 1 teaspoon of dried flowers per cup of boiled water. Let steep for at least 10 minutes. Strain and drink 3 cups daily for best results. You can also add fresh red clover flowers to salads, or use red clover sprouts on salads, sandwiches, or wraps. You should avoid picking red clover on lawns that have been sprayed with fertilizer or pesticides, or if your lawn is close to high-traffic areas.

I found this to be an excellent read as before I thought of these “herbs” as weeds, and they aren’t what I thought they were. They are very good for you. Do any of you use any of them? If so, I’d love to hear from you…
