Hello World!  How are you doing? I am well & today I’m sharing info about one of my favorite foods – honey & some of it’s amazing properties; & best of all, it tastes great!

the Honey Bee

the Honey Bee is our friend & makes something we can use for healing!

Ways Honey Can Heal

The fossil record tells us honeybees have been around for 150 million

years or more. No one knows when we discovered the treasure hidden in their hives, but paintings of beekeepers lining the walls of a cave in Spain prove that we have been practicing the art of beekeeping for at least 7,000 years. Honey is versatile. It has been prized as a sweetener, as medicine, as an offering for the gods, as currency, & as a symbol of love. In Greek mythology, for example, Cupid dips his arrows in honey before aiming them at our hearts.

According to ayurveda, honey is the nectar of life. Because it is created

from the essence of a flower’s sex organs, it has a natural affinity with reproductive tissue, & it can also heal your sore throats, colds, coughs, ulcers, burns, and your wounds. And when ingested with a healing herb (like ashwagandha), honey travels to your deepest tissues, transporting the chemical properties & the subtle energies of medicine to your cellular level.

Ayurveda says that raw honey is medicine, but cooked honey is a slow

poison. Why? In its natural form, honey is rich in minerals, vitamins, enzymes, amino acids, & carbohydrates. But heat strips honey of most of its nutritional value & transforms the honey molecules into a non – homogenized glue that adheres to mucous membranes & clogs subtle energy channels. Cooked honey creates cellular toxicity & may lead to immunological dysfunction. It can also clog the arteries & lead to atherosclerosis (thickening of the arteries), hampering blood flow to your vital organs; So as a general rule, honey should never be cooked, & nothing should be cooked with honey. Instead, add raw honey to your yogurt, warm tea, or spread it on your bread or toast.

These days, most honey sold commercially has been heated & should be

avoided. Look for the words “raw” or “unpasteurized” on honey you buy at a health-food store or online at places like the Ayurvedic Institute (www.ayurveda.com) or www.eBeeHoney.com. But the purest form of honey is local & raw because it helps prevent (or calm) your seasonal allergies & is full of prana (vital energy). Check your local farmers’ market, & if you live in the country, you should keep an eye out for roadside honey stands.

Honey, Help Me!
Ayurvedic texts are full of honey-based remedies for a wide range of your ailments.

For obesity, high blood pressure, and/or high cholesterol, you should drink a cup of hot water with a teaspoon of honey & 5 – 10 drops of apple cider vinegar early in the morning daily. (Ayurvedic texts say honey scrapes fat & cholesterol from your body’s tissues.)

To relieve your rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, take 1 teaspoon of honey with 200 mg powdered guggulu daily.

To heal oral ulcers, apply 1 teaspoon honey & a pinch of turmeric to your canker sores, mouth ulcers, or sores on your tongue. This mixture will generate saliva & draw out toxins; you should spit it out to speed your healing process. For internal ulcers, you mix a cup of warm milk with a teaspoon of honey twice daily.

To heal a wound, you dress it daily with sterilized gauze brushed with honey; dispose at night.

For the common cold, you should mix 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (Ceylon is best as it is a purer form of cinnamon) with 1 teaspoon honey & eat 2-3 times a day.

To clear your sinuses, you can take a mixture of 1 teaspoon each of fresh ginger juice & honey 2-3 times a day.

For asthma, you eat a mixture made of 1/2 teaspoon bay leaf powder, 1/4 teaspoon pippali, and 1 teaspoon of honey 2-3 times daily.

For nausea, vomiting, &/or indigestion, you mix one part lemon juice with one part honey. Dip your index finger into this mixture & lick it slowly twice daily.

For anxiety, you should drink 1 cup of orange juice with 1 teaspoon of honey & a pinch of nutmeg powder twice daily.

To help reduce the craving for cigarettes, you chew small pieces of pineapple with 1/2 teaspoon of honey before you smoke.

For abdominal pain, you can take a mixture of 1/4 teaspoon ground bay leaf, 1/4 teaspoon ajwan (celery seeds), & 1 teaspoon of honey before lunch & dinner daily.

For chronic fever, you make a tea of 1 teaspoon of holy basil (tulsi) & 1 cup of hot water. Add 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper powder & 1 teaspoon of honey. You take this 2-3 times a day.

To aid poor circulation, you will mix 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon trikatu, & 1 teaspoon honey in 1 cup of hot water; then you steep for 10 minutes, & take twice a day.

To stop hiccups, you mix 1 teaspoon honey & 1 teaspoon castor oil in a container; then dip your index finger into the mixture & lick it. Repeat every 10 minutes until your hiccups stop. (Hiccups are due to spasm of your diaphragm, & these ingredients in equal proportion are anti- spasmodic.)

Did you know?
To make one pound of honey, a swarm of honeybees flies about 24,000 miles & visits 3 to 9 million flowers.

Because its qualities are heating & sweet, honey is good for kapha & vata, & in moderation with pitta.

Please Note
Raw honey is not recommended for infants under the age of 18 months, the very elderly, or others with compromised immune systems.

I’ve made a list of the terms that I was unfamiliar with as I’ve done some research for their meaning &  want to share this info with you (in case, like me, you’re also unfamiliar with these)

  • ayurveda – is the ancient Indian science of what makes us alive. It is the sister science to yoga & like yoga it has been around for 5000 years & shares the same goals as yoga: health, longevity & enlightenment. When we have an understanding of Ayurveda, we can stay in balance physically, mentally, emotionally & spiritually.
  • ajwan – celery seeds
  • kapha – is our flesh body. It is our bones, teeth, muscles, & everything dense in our bodies. The qualities of Kapha are slow, steady, heavy, oily, & cold. When Kapha people are in balance, they are loving, nurturing & grounded.
  • vatais formed when prana mixes with the elements air & space. It governs movement. The qualities of Vata are light, dry. airy, quick, & cold. Vata people are thin & either tall or short.
  • pitta – heat, is made up of the elements fire & water. This governs digestion, nutrition, metabolism & body temperature. The qualities of Pitta are hot, sour, pungent, sharp & acidic. Pitta people have strong digestion.
  • pippali – is a long pepper that is used as an ayurvedic natural herbal weight loss aid.
  • guggulu – aids in weight loss
  • hulsi – holy basil
  • trikatu – a classic Ayurvedic herbal blend of pippali, ginger, & black pepper. These herbs work in synergy to stimulate & allow for more efficient digestion in your stomach while promoting proper bile flow, healthy detoxification & fat metabolism. This blend primes the digestive tract to digest food, absorb nutrients & efficiently remove wastes.

I’ve tried to keep the definitions basic so they’ll be easily understood. I hope I’ve succeeded…
